Long Island, Maine

Located off the coast of Portland, Maine, this idyllic island is easily accessible from Portland’s Old Harbor via the Casco Bay Ferry or by private water taxi. The relaxing one-hour ferry ride provides a natural disconnect from the “busyness” of everyday life. Private water taxis take about 20 minutes. The ferry terminal located in the Old Port of Portland is easily accessible from the airport, Amtrak station, and bus station.

Long Island is approximately three miles long and three-quarters of a mile wide. It offers some of the most beautiful and unspoiled beaches and harbors in New England. The island is home to about 200 lobster fishermen and their families. Most of these families have lived on the island for generations.

CreativeLedge Studio is a short walk or bike ride from the Long Island ferry dock. Rock Ledge does not offer overnight accommodation for participants. The facilities are open and available for use only during the daylight hours. The Rock Ledge structures are designed to use the abundant natural light of coastal Maine.

There is no electricity or indoor plumbing at Rock Ledge. Overnight stays and camping are prohibited.

Rock Ledge participants have several options for accommodations (see websites below). Long Island has a gracious historic inn, several fine bed & breakfasts, and rental cottages. Transportation is primarily by foot or bike, except for one island taxi. The island has an informal patio restaurant, general store, and new library.

Portland offers several historic hotels and many excellent restaurants. Staying in Portland and making day trips to Rock Ledge is a good option made possible by the convenient ferry and water taxi.

Rock Ledge participants can fly direct to Portland Airport or catch Concord Trailways (an enjoyable two-hour motor coach ride) from Boston Logan Airport. Amtrak and major bus lines also service Portland, Maine.
